There is no fixed minimum CRS score. The cutoff changes with each draw. In 2026, all-program draw cutoffs have ranged from 485 to 530. Category-based draws (STEM, healthcare, French) cut off lower — sometimes 430 to 490. Your best strategy is to enter the pool now and increase your score while waiting.
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) determines your place in the Express Entry pool. IRCC runs draws roughly every two weeks and invites candidates above the cutoff to apply for permanent residence. The higher your score, the faster you get invited.
This guide explains how the score works, what recent cutoffs have been, and exactly how to raise your number.
Your total CRS score is made up of four components. The maximum without a provincial nomination is around 600 points.
| Component | Max Points (no spouse) | Max Points (with spouse) |
|---|---|---|
| Core Human Capital | 500 | 460 |
| Spouse/Common-Law Partner Factors | — | 40 |
| Skill Transferability | 100 | 100 |
| Additional Points | 600 | 600 |
Age peaks at 29–30 (max 110 points, or 100 with spouse). Language is the biggest single factor — a CLB 9 in English earns 136 points (no spouse); a CLB 10 earns 150. Education contributes up to 150 points for a master's degree or professional degree. Canadian work experience adds up to 80 points for 3+ years.
| Draw Type | Typical CRS Range (2026) | How Often |
|---|---|---|
| All-program (general) | 485 – 530 | Every 2 weeks |
| Canadian Experience Class | 491 – 514 | Periodic |
| STEM occupations | 435 – 490 | Periodic |
| Healthcare occupations | 430 – 475 | Periodic |
| French-language proficiency | 375 – 410 | Periodic |
| Provincial Nominee Program | 795 – 810 | Every 2 weeks |
PNP draws always cut off at 700+ because a provincial nomination itself adds 600 points to your score.
You must qualify under at least one of three programs: Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), or Federal Skilled Trades (FST). CEC requires Canadian work experience. FSW requires meeting minimum language, education, and points grid requirements.
You need: a valid IELTS/CELPIP score (general training), an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from IRCC-approved organization if educated outside Canada, and proof of work experience. Your profile is valid for 12 months — do not create it before your documents are ready.
Go to canada.ca and create an IRCC account. Submit your Express Entry profile. IRCC calculates your CRS score automatically based on your answers. You enter the pool immediately after submission.
Use the time in the pool to raise your score. Retake IELTS to hit CLB 9 or 10. Accumulate more Canadian work experience. Apply for provincial nominations. Even a 10–20 point gain can make the difference in an all-program draw.
After receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA), you have exactly 60 days to submit a complete PR application. Missing the 60-day window means you must re-enter the pool from scratch.
| Action | Points Gained | Time Required |
|---|---|---|
| Improve English from CLB 8 to CLB 9 | +20 to +40 | 2–6 months study |
| Improve English from CLB 9 to CLB 10 | +10 to +20 | 3–6 months study |
| Add second language (French, CLB 7+) | +25 to +50 | 6–12 months study |
| Gain 1 year Canadian work experience | +30 to +40 | 12 months |
| Get a provincial nomination (PNP) | +600 | Varies by province |
| Get a qualifying job offer | +50 to +200 | Depends on employer |
Waiting for a "perfect" score before creating a profile. Category-based draws can invite candidates with scores well below 500. Enter the pool now and improve your score while waiting. You cannot be invited if you have no profile.
Using IELTS Academic instead of IELTS General Training. Express Entry requires the General Training version. Academic scores are not accepted. If you submitted Academic scores, your profile may be invalid.
Letting the profile expire without renewing. Express Entry profiles are valid for 12 months. If yours expires, you lose your place in the pool and must resubmit. Set a calendar reminder at 11 months.
Missing the 60-day ITA deadline. After receiving an ITA, you have exactly 60 days to submit a complete application. Partial submissions are rejected. Have all documents ready in advance so you are not scrambling after the invitation arrives.
